What you can do

  • Start from 1, multiply or divide by a chosen number and watch the chain of steps, a picture of the value and the step counter change.
  • On the staircase each step up multiplies and each step down divides; in Fill in, students type the values of the steps and check them.
  • The rules for multiplying and dividing powers and for a power of a power, product or quotient are shown with factors that join up or cancel.
  • Powers of ten: a scale from 10⁻⁹ to 10⁹ with examples from a DNA molecule to the Sun, scientific notation step by step, and practice with checking.
  • Practise working out powers, play True or false, print a worksheet for the chosen mode or download the picture as a PNG.
