Two hundred grids: 0.4 is 40 coloured squares and 0.45 is 45, so 0.4 < 0.45

What you can do

  • Type a number or click a square: the grid is coloured, and the same number is shown as a decimal, a fraction and a percentage, e.g. 0.47 = 47/100 = 47%.
  • Thousandths appear as strips in a square, and numbers greater than 1 as several grids; below, the number is split up, e.g. 4 tenths and 7 hundredths = 47 hundredths.
  • Compare two grids side by side: 0.4 and 0.45, or 0.3 and 0.30, with an explanation in hundredths.
  • Add and subtract by colouring: the second addend is another colour, and what you take away is crossed out; a sum greater than 1 carries on to a second grid.
  • Multiply tenths with an area model (0.3 × 0.4 = 0.12), hide the calculation for a task and download the picture as a PNG.
